Visions of Greater Buffalo is a CEPA fundraiser that invites 50 individuals with unique community perspectives to take up single-use film cameras and share their personal vision of the region. Started in 2005, the resulting collection of Buffalo photography has over 350 images taken by visionaries who are representative of the arts, business, sports, community service, and faith-based organizations of the Queen City.
The cameras are submitted to CEPA Gallery, then developed and reviewed by a panel of professionals. The best photograph from each camera is matted and framed for inclusion in a special exhibit that ends with a silent auction featuring all 50 of the selected works. Proceeds from the auction as well as print sales go to CEPA’s internationally recognized exhibits and community education program.
Prints shown in this collection are a limited selection from years 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2012 & 2013. To view the entire collection, please contact CEPA.
This photo was featured in Hope, Rebellion & Justice, the 2020 debut solo exhibit by artist Tito Ruiz, featuring striking portraits, emotional action shots, and powerful street photography celebrating the intersectional fight for justice in WNY.

and
Saturday, June 10th, 2023
11:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Ages 13+
In this workshop, we will experiment with some of the most archaic photography techniques; pinhole camera and contact printing. From images captured on 16mm film frame by frame, we create negative and positive copies with Print Film. This technique allows the freedom to work directly with the surface of the film with light, in the same way as a painter leaves their gesture on a canvas.
Using a 35mm photographic film cassette loaded 16mm film, participants will construct their own rudimentary DIY pinhole cameras using household items on day one, and return on day two to develop their film and create a finished 16mm film, splicing the classes images together.
Students will also view works made with these techniques by artists like Paolo Gioli, Dianna Barrie, Philipp Fleischmann, and others.
Participants are welcome to bring their own household materials for a Pinhole Camera – a matchbox, mint tin, 35mm pot, or other similar small box. Otherwise, Materials and Supplies Included.

CEPA Gallery publication from exhibition for Mythologies of Identity, Volume I: A Cindy Sherman Retrospective from the Gerald Mead Collection & Volume II: Real-Life Cowboys by Jean-René Leblanc & A Genderless World by Dane Adrian Smith.
Through fashion props and styling, the artists of Mythologies of Identity showcase personas that challenge heteronormative definitions of gender in photography. The project bridges the gap between masculine and feminine through various simulations. First, Sherman’s career-long identity performances through self-portraiture; then emerging trans artist Dane-Adrian Smith and their Post-Gender World; finally, a Virtual Reality project on contemporary cowboy culture in the Canadian Midwest by Jean-René Leblanc. Following a long history of exploratory art practice at CEPA, the exhibition illustrates how visuals play a role in personal agency and empowerment in gender expression.

July 15-19, 1:00pm-4:00pm
Ages 13 to 17
In this class, inspired by the New Vision photography movement, students will practice a number of different analog hands-on techniques while learning a little art history. New Vision was a photography movement that briefly existed between WWI and WWII. Despite being short-lived, this moment greatly shaped our modern sense of photography, producing many of the pictorial conventions familiar to us today.
Techniques students will experiment with include 35mm Photography, Double Exposure, Photograms, Collage/Typography, Cliché Verre, and Collage.
All materials included. Students are welcome to bring their own film cameras if they have one or will be provided with CEPA film cameras to borrow.
For ages 13-17

This workshop is limited to 8 participants.

No Progress in Pleasure is the artists’ first book created after developing her mature style. This work, consisting of stark black and white images combined with provocative text in an aggressive typeface quickly became her signature style and with it Kruger went on to produce some of the most iconic images of the 1980s.
