“The First Show” University at Buffalo First Year MFA Exhibition
The First Show features the works of eight Buffalo-based artists in UB’s 2024 MFA cohort: Jonathan Bolt, Salem Browning, Dalton Carlson, Joey Goergen, Lydia Kegler, Chloe Koegel, Ali Lazik, and Cristiano Pereira. The central concepts in their works are divergent however a thread of continuity weaves throughout their research areas. The side-by-side pairings constellate unusual thematic and aesthetic relationships, at moments coalescing and at others disparate. The artists enlist varying techniques and mediums including painting, darkroom contact printing, 3D scanning, hand-embroidery, textiles photography, interactive work, and mixed media. From contrasted styles within the artwork, themes of the body, identity, queerness, consumption, alter ego, and pleasure are approached.
