ARCHITECTURE + EDUCATION (closing event)

Closing Reception: January 19, 2018

CEPA is happy to host the sixth biennial Architecture + Education Exhibition with a closing reception on Friday, January 19th from 5:30 – 730. Join us at CEPA Gallery for an amazing display of collaboration between the Buffalo Architecture Foundation and students and teachers of five Buffalo Public Schools.

Architecture + Education (A+E) was founded to increase awareness of the built and natural environment and to provide architecture as a multidisciplinary form of active learning to the Buffalo Public School System. Over the years, A+E has grown its focus to provide a strong program that brings together educators, university students, and architects working collaboratively in the classroom with public school students. Over the course of 3 months the group brings together architectural principles that coincide with a common core subject being taught in a complementary manner. Each week the team works with the students in this manner by means of active learning activities which helps expose the students to a new way of thinking and problem solving. The culmination of the program is a public exhibition of all the students work in a downtown art exhibit well attended by the students, their parents, and the greater community.

The A+E program is unique given the various audiences involved. University students are gaining college credit, Architects are gaining continuing education credits, School Teachers are learning alternative methods to integrate the common core, and the students are gaining awareness of the built environment. The Architecture + Education program is as much about diversity as it is education. The student population we reach is predominantly minority many of whom are below the poverty line.
