A 2-Day Photography Class for Ages 13+

This workshop, offered as part of our ongoing exhibition, The Power of Resilience and Hope – Photography & the Holocaust: Then and Now, explores a deliberate and contemplative approach to photography, focusing on the importance of reflection and intention in image creation. This class is less about the camera’s settings and more about using the camera as a tool for careful observation and appreciation of the world surrounding us. Participants will learn techniques inspired by photographers such as Michael Kenna and Henri Cartier-Bresson, as well as artists featured in  The Power of Resilience and Hope: Jason Francisco and Jason Langer.

This class will use both Pinhole and Holga cameras (all materials supplied by CEPA) to understand the restraints of early, slower forms of photography and to appreciate the drastic change that the technological advancement of the handheld camera allowed. Using very simple cameras places constraints on the process of photography, requiring the photographer to be more present and cautious when making an image.

Participants will learn different approaches to slow photography and make pinhole photographs at CEPA during the first session. Participants will take a Holga camera home with them to conduct their own slow photography projects over a week. Once the cameras/film are returned, the images will be developed, scanned, and printed for a short critique/discussion during the second session at CEPA.
