Photography Works

A Mentoring Program

Photography Works is a year-long program that provides 10 students, ages 15-20, who have a serious interest in photography, with in depth instruction and mentoring, culminating in an exhibition at CEPA.

This is an opportunity for dedicated young photographers to develop their craft and art, work on a long form photo project, expand their resume through professional development opportunities, produce an exhibition and have their work seen widely across CEPA’s network and the Buffalo Arts scene.

Young creatives face many challenges in starting their own photo businesses or getting their work recognized. This class represents a major leg up for any student seriously interested in pursuing photography.

There is no fee for this program, and upon completion the students will keep the cameras provided.

Students will attend a series of workshops, demonstrations and artist talks, in addition to regularly scheduled meetings and group critiques. Students will be granted unlimited access to CEPA facilities and weekly one on one mentorship opportunities.

The schedule each year is different, but generally students can expect the following:

  • To learn a variety of different techniques and approaches to photography: Advanced camera controls, exposure and manual settings, experience in both analog and digital photography.
  • To work on their own self-directed projects and produce a group exhibition.
  • To meet photographers working in a variety of different creative modes – Fine Art, Portraiture, Documentary, and more.
  • The opportunity to assist in community outreach, help teach youth classes and with photoshoots.
  • Free/Unlimited Access to CEPA’s Darkroom, Digital Lab, Photo Studio, Workshop/Classes.
  • One on One Mentorship
