CEPA’s Current Focus Resident: Joshua Thermidor
“During my residency, I will be experimenting with collage and digital scanning across image and text. I’m interested in how we can use visual imagery and writing to create unfamiliar arrangements of familiar things. As we attempt to move in a world of surveillance, displacement, genocide, and ecological destruction, I’m wondering how we take stock of that material and use it to take our collective power back.
Each week, I will host open studio hours where participants can bring in materials that we will transform. These materials include conversations, letters, job applications, resumes, degrees, rejections, acceptances, cultural garments, journal/diary entries, song lyrics, living languages, dead languages, family photos, solo photos, passport photos, Polaroids, grocery lists, report cards, progress reports, sketches, schematics…etc! Materials can be transformed collaboratively, or participants can leave them with me.”

The goal of the Focus Residency is to support emerging local artists through mentorship, professional development, and active community engagement. For four months, the Resident Artist will have 24/7 access to a studio in CEPA’s Focus Gallery, where street-facing windows offer the public a view into the creative process while making the arts more accessible. The Resident Artist will also host monthly public events designed to foster connection and encourage participation within the community.
