Index of a Painted Film – Blake Barit (2024)

Index of a Painted Film is a structural film exhibit that explores the materiality of analog film work by displaying a painted film in multiple ways, offering the spectator differing methods of experiencing the work. Commenting on process via the evidence of the hand of the maker, Index of a Painted Film is an invitation to commune with the apparatus of filmmaking and the tactile wonder of material process. This exhibit contains rapidly moving images and elements of flicker.

Blake Barit is an experimental filmmaker, educator, and researcher whose celluloid work explores memory and materiality, as well as perception and reception. Barit is passionate about the preservation and curation of celluloid film and hosts a monthly 16mm film screening at Hallwalls in Buffalo. Currently, Blake is exploring the societal shift from organic to digital life and the effect this transition has on the human mind and psyche. He produces single-channel film-based work, installations, performance pieces, and audio experiments.
