The Children of San Jose
In June of 2014, photographers Alexis Oltmer and William Bergmann invited children from San Jose del Negrito, Honduras, to have their portraits taken at the local medical clinic. The studio was set up in front of the resident doctors home, utilizing natural sunlight and a single red bench. The resulting images convey the complexities of childhood self-expression, identity and performance.
The project is an attempt to shed light on the experience of life in a place that might seem at first glance to be as culturally different from life here as it is geographically. And yet, the familiarity of the posture, gaze, and play suggest that there is something universal to the experience of childhood.
All proceeds from donations will go directly to Shoulder to Shoulder Pittsburg to support the future needs of the community of San Jose del Negrito.
