Chemical Drawings by Juan Perdiguero and Students

CEPA is excited to announce the opening of Chemical Drawings featuring the work of Juan Perdiguero and students. Perdiguero’s work is mixed media on chemically treated silver gelatin paper. The monochromatic drawings and paintings are free hand renderings of animals and human figures, rooted in figuration and informed by the tradition of Spanish Baroque Painting. Perdiguero’s reductive process of applying and removing ink from the luminous silver gelatin surface of photo paper produces a chiaroscuro effect that imbues the work with an ambiguous pictorial sense.

“I manipulate the technical borders between painting, drawing and photographic processes as a way to create images that attract, seduce, confront and engage the viewer’s subconscious mind. My desire to find crossovers between mediums is aimed at better defining the need for a more personal vision of the figurative aesthetics of representation and the humanistic concepts that are the base of my work.” – Juan Perdiguero

Perdiguero led a two day workshop at CEPA, where students learned how to chemically treat silver gelatin photo paper, producing chemigrams which become the foundation for mixed media drawing and painting. In a unique opportunity, workshop participants were invited to show their work alongside Perdiguero.

There will be an opening reception on October 21, 2022 from 5-8 pm. The show is taking place in the historic Market Arcade Building located at 617 Main St in Buffalo and will run until November 19th, 2022.
