…but as a symptom is a series of black and white photographs weaving together a fragmented narrative reflecting the durational nature of traumatic processing. Through the blend of photography, text, and mark-making the works explore the complexities of language and manipulation. The artist says: “I photograph small still lifes, recreating the visible and invisible traces left by experiences. I start from a biographical standpoint, and draw from both private and public sources; my own writing, letters, online dictionaries, and physical books. The materiality in the works serves as a metaphor for embodied experience and exposes a disconnect between words and their meaning.”
Roni Aviv is a visual artist based in New York City. Aviv holds an MFA in Visual Arts from Columbia University. Her work has been published and exhibited internationally. Recent exhibition venues include Bronx Museum, Center for Book Arts, Real Art Ways, Longwood Art Gallery, Tiger Strikes Asteroid, Steve Turner Gallery, and The Jewish Museum. Aviv has recently been published in BOMB, GRANTA, and Erev Rav magazines. Recent residencies and fellowships include NARS (2021), the Center for Book Arts (2022), and AIM Bronx Museum fellowship (2023), as well as Centrum Residency (2024).
