UseYourVoice: Stop Hate Mural at Western New York Book Arts Center

In conjunction with CEPA Gallery’s current exhibition The Power of Resilience and Hope: Photography and the Holocaust: Then & Now, CEPA will install a temporary mural on Western New York Book Arts’  exterior wall on Mohawk st.

The mural is inspired by project artist Mizin Shin’s #UseYourVoice series that is on display in CEPA’s passageway gallery. Shin’s project was a response to rising hate crimes as a way to speak out against racially motivated prejudice and violence.

The mural design is curated by Ruby Merritt and will be installed by the CEPA staff. The motif of the statement Use Your Voice repeats on bursting bright colors to catch the attention and draw the viewers to the message that we must use our voices to stop the hatred of anyone or any one culture. The message has been translated into a variety of languages to engage diverse linguistic communities. “Wheatpaste’s accessibility is a wonderful way to connect makers and viewers. It can be done anywhere, with any image on paper – giving it endless affordable possibilities. It lends itself as an affordable and easy to produce form of public art. On Friday, May 17, 2024, you are invited to come watch as the installation of the mural happens throughout the day and stay for the gallery opening for Marquis Burton during the evening at Western New York Book Arts, 468 Washington st.
