CEPA was thrilled to welcome 40 students from The Urban Leadership Learning Community (ULLC), a program at Canisius College that enables the best and brightest students from Greater Buffalo to enroll in a unique educational opportunity. The ULLC offers students a four-year program to help create the next generation of leaders in Buffalo and Western New York from a population that historically has been denied positions of influence or power in Buffalo. CEPA teaching artist Ruby Merritt guided the students through a tour of the current exhibition Ascension of Black Stillness, creating poetry inspired from the artwork. Kim Sholly, CEPA teaching artist and board member introduced students to the magic of the darkroom, creating photograms. Education Director Lauren Tent did lighting activities including light painting (long exposures) as well as action photography using strobe lights.

Students left having learned about multiple Black contemporary artists, discovered their own creative potential in the art of photography and writing and found a new destination in CEPA. Our missions fosters the exploration of photography and contemporary visual arts through its exhibition and arts education programs, nurturing creativity and encouraging active learning
