Details on the Upcoming Odyssey Workshops

CEPA Gallery and the Veterans One-Stop Center of WNY are proud to co-present the Odyssey Workshops, a free 12-week intensive photography course for post 9/11 combat veterans beginning in January 2019. Through photography and writing, veterans will explore the return home in the workshop from their perspective.

Picturing Life After Combat

Participants will work in small groups to make pictures that illustrate their lives in and out of uniform. This is a unique opportunity for veterans to share their stories among a group of peers, create a forum to control their narratives, and design artwork that reflects the past and present. The struggles of US combat veterans reintegrating into society are largely misunderstood, and rarely communicated by those immersed in the experience. The Odyssey Workshops will offer combat veterans a new tool to navigate the road home from service.

The project will be led by photographers Brendan Bannon and Julian Chinana, a US Marine Scout/Sniper.

  • Bannon’s work has appeared in the New York Times. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art and at UN headquarters.
  • Julian Chinana holds a degree in studio art with a concentration in photography from the University at Buffalo. Chinana’s personal work is deeply rooted in personal experiences with war, and trauma.
