2014 Schedule of Programs
Arts in Modern Ireland Lecture Series
Thursdays, May 8th-29th 2014
These lectures will cover the range of arts festivals staged in modern Ireland, and highlight the types of events Irish audiences attend, how they interact with these events, and why. The lectures will also cover the trends and geography of international acts visiting Ireland to participate in festivals, giving specific examples of the artists and their work.
Street Portraiture Workshop
Saturdays July 12th-August 16th 12-2pm
This workshop will cover a style of street portraiture originated in Ireland by Michael Brown, where he has instigated a new trend in modern Irish culture. He will teach this technique, in which diverse segments of the population are engaged on the street resulting in high quality monochrome portraits with collected stories. By bringing this unique method to the streets of Buffalo, Brown hopes to impart both his technical knowledge as well as his art of engagement to students, allowing them an opportunity to better confront this challenging art form. By displaying collected work from the workshop Brown further hopes to open the hearts and minds of the American public by exposing them to this unusual style of portrait making.
Classic Theater Photography Workshop
Wednesdays, September 2nd-October 8th, 2014 6-8pm
Michael Brown was sole-photographer, and arts image consultant to the Arts Council of Ireland from 2001-2011. During his tenure, he toured Ireland annually collecting unique, candid images of arts events for their image bank. Michael’s charge was to feature performances which displayed the most artistic integrity, and the Arts Council gave him free reign— a precedent, as far as we know, and definitely ”culturally unique”. Michael will illustrate these workshops with his work for the Arts Council of Ireland, while tutoring students in the making of candid theater photography. Students will visit Buffalo’s producing theaters to learn the craft during rehearsals and live performances.
Michael Brown: New Work Exhibition
November 8 – December 20, 2014
Artist Michael Brown will display work created during his residency. Tours of the exhibition will be led by the artist each Tuesday afternoon.
Dates are subject to revision.
